Fiber vs Cable Internet: Which Is Better in 2026?

Updated 2026 · 6 min read

If both fibre and cable are available where you live, the choice affects far more than the headline download number. Here's how they really compare.

Speed

Both offer fast download speeds (often up to 1 Gbps or more). The big difference is upload: fibre is usually symmetric (same up and down), while cable upload is often a fraction of its download — a real limitation for video calls, streaming and backups.

Latency and consistency

Fibre generally has lower, steadier latency, which matters for gaming and calls. Cable can slow down during peak evening hours because neighbours share local capacity.

Reliability

Fibre is immune to electromagnetic interference and tends to be more stable in bad weather. Cable is widely available and still very capable for most households.

Price and availability

Cable is available in more areas and is sometimes cheaper at entry tiers. Fibre availability is growing fast and often wins on value per Mbps, especially for upload-heavy use.

How to tell what you have

Run our speed test and look at the upload vs download: roughly equal numbers usually mean fibre; a much smaller upload usually means cable or DSL. Check the loaded latency and bufferbloat grade too — fibre typically scores better under load.
