Why Upload Speed Matters More Than You Think
Internet plans advertise big download numbers, but upload speed quietly decides how good your video calls, posts and backups feel.
What upload speed affects
Video calls (Zoom, FaceTime, Meet), posting photos and videos, cloud backups, online gaming, working from home, and sending large files or emails all depend on upload.
How much do you need?
For one HD video call, 3–5 Mbps upload is enough. For working from home with cloud sync, aim for 10+ Mbps. Creators uploading 4K video want 25+ Mbps. Below ~2 Mbps, calls get choppy and uploads crawl.
Why upload is often so low
Cable and DSL connections are asymmetric — they devote most capacity to download. Fibre is usually symmetric, which is why it feels better for calls and remote work.

Run our test and compare upload to download. If upload is a tiny fraction and you rely on calls or backups, a fibre plan (or a higher tier) may help more than a faster download number.
