Why Is My WiFi Slow on My Phone? (Causes & Fixes)

Updated 2026 · 8 min read

When WiFi is slow specifically on your phone — but fine on your laptop, or fine on mobile data — the cause is usually something phone-specific. Here's how to track it down and fix it.

First, confirm it's really the phone

Open your browser and run a speed test on your phone over WiFi, then immediately on another device on the same WiFi. If the other device is fast and your phone is slow, the problem is phone-specific. If both are slow, it's your WiFi or internet, not the phone.

Cause 1: You're on the wrong band

Phones often "stick" to the slower 2.4GHz band, especially if you've wandered away from the router and back. 2.4GHz is slower and more congested than 5GHz. Fix: in WiFi settings, forget the network and reconnect while standing near the router, or if your router broadcasts separate band names, choose the 5GHz one.

Cause 2: Distance and obstacles

Phones have small antennas, so they're more sensitive to distance, walls and interference than laptops. Move closer to the router and re-test. If speed jumps, coverage is your issue — consider a mesh system or WiFi extender.

Cause 3: Background apps and updates

Apps updating, photos backing up to the cloud, or downloads running in the background eat your phone's bandwidth. Check for app updates in progress, pause cloud sync, and close background apps, then re-test.

Cause 4: Too many saved networks / a software glitch

Phones sometimes get confused connections. Toggle Airplane mode on and off, or reboot the phone — this re-establishes a clean WiFi connection and fixes a surprising number of slowdowns.

Cause 5: A full or old phone

Very low storage or an aging phone can slow everything, including how fast it processes network data. Free up space and keep the OS updated.

Cause 6: Router-side device limits

Some routers throttle or deprioritise devices when many are connected. If your network is crowded, your phone may be getting less. QoS settings or reducing connected devices helps.

Key takeaway: The fastest diagnosis is comparing your phone to another device on the same WiFi. That one test tells you whether to fix the phone, the WiFi, or call your ISP.
